The future of Fiumicino

More exciting news from Design International this week at MAPIC Italy in Milan, when Aeroporti di Roma unveiled their ambitious plans for the redevelopment of Fiumicino Airport in Rome, Italy. Since the outset, Design International has been involved with key elements of the major redevelopment programme.

The first of our three projects on was the masterplan for the land-side development of the site. Ensuring that we capitalised on the newly planned people-mover linking all the terminals, we created an innovative scheme that ensures the landside is both easily navigable and provides a pleasant experience for all users.

The quality of our masterplan design led to a second project from ADR and its affiliated engineering company, SPEA: the creation of both concept and integrated design for a new – and first – business hub at Fiumicino. We worked with IDEAS and United Consulting for the architectural structure and MEP design respectively to create this first business hub at the airport. With a mix of spaces from conference facilities to flexible working spaces, restaurants and leisure facilities, the new hub provides an environment fit for the world of modern work and international travel.

Construction, which will provide some 15,500 jobs, is due to start in autumn. Delivery of the completed business hub with all other elements is due by 2024.
